I met the Wolfman in the LA airport one morning. He was standing by the window watching the planes being prepared for takeoff. I walked over and quietly said hello. He turned and looked at me, smiled, and said hello. I asked him where he was going and he said Atlanta. I said have a nice flight and then walked away. It was not much of a meeting, but I'll never forget it.

I heard the Wolfman for the first time way back in 1973. Since I live in Holland, reception of American Forces Network's transmitter in Frankfurt, Germany on 873 wasn't that clear. But his shows were filled with a still unsurpassed magic, a magic only the Wolfman is capable of creating. I have all his records (e.g. Through the Ages) and I treasure these. He lives on and on and on.........Have Mercy!

As a corporate event planner, I had the opportunity to contract Wolfman to do an event...unfortunately, he died the very next week. During the time I spent with him, he assured me that he had never missed a contracted date...well, unfortunately, he did miss this one. He gave me an autographed t-shirt (which you already have) an autographed tape (which I will try to locate and send) and was really fun to talk to. Many many people I work with new I had contracted with him and the morning his death was announed, I received so many calls...we were all so very sad.

The Wolfman was my first (and only) rock 'n roll radio hero, and his show opened my ears to the wide musical world around me. His autobiography is one of the most ballsy and inspirational self-made success stories in print - makes stuff like Zig Ziglar seem depressing by comparison. Thanks Wolfman!

I am a Las Vegas cab driver, and one ride I will never forget was when I transported a lady and two gentlemen to the Las Vegas Hilton. The lady informed me that she was the widow of the late Wolfman Jack, and that she would be speaking at a conference there. I think she was both surprised and touched when I related to her that I was quite a fan of his, and that I even knew his real name, Bob Smith. I know that this may not be interesting to anyone else, but it made me feel good to make HER feel good.

I got back with Wolfman to the 1970s during my teen years in Hawaii (listening to him on 83 KIKI-AM) and overseas on American Forces Radio.

Joined the USN in 1976 as a broadcast specialist (Journalist), and aired Wolf's shows on ship and shore stations in Japan, Okinawa and Australia. For us local AFRT jocks, he was a hard act to follow -- but we loved him. He was the "Voice Of America" when it came to rock 'n roll.

Tell Janis, Jimi, Jim, Peter, John, George and Keith we said hi! You know he's hosting the BEST edition of The Midnight Special from Heaven!!

I was in high school in the San Diego area in the mid 60's, when WJ was doing (approximately) 9:15 to midnight on XERB. I say ' approximately' because, starting at about 9 PM, XERB would run a 15 minute 'infomercial' for Turfcraft, touting sure-fire winners and combos (including the 'Colonel's Special') at Santa Anita, Del Mar, Caliente, etc. About a minute before the end of host Leo Herbert's deadpan prognosticatings, you'd hear WJ in the background, exhorting Leo to 'get off the radio' or 'hurry up, Leo'. To my knowledge, Leo was on tape, and never interacted with WJ. One of my proudest possessions is a reply to my request for permission to tape the show so I could play it over the P/A system at school during lunch. I got a sloppily typed turndown (he thought I was asking when he would be appearing in SD) on personalized stationery (a wolf in spats gracing an upper corner of the paper) - XERB was keeping him under wraps (!). He concluded his short correspondence with an 'All Right, Man' that I can still hear him saying.
I wonder how many young innocents talked to his birdie, Rufus? Hot Moisey, Baby, I still love it to death!

A few years back I had the opportunity to catch an interview w/ the Wolfman and he really touched home w/ his openess. It was positive, heartfelt and came across as the gneuine feelings of a loving man. From my experience men such as he have always been the toughest--willing to speak their heart and in turn share that vibe that it's ok to love this life and those in it.
When I heard he past I had no idea I would feel the loss of someone I never met.
I'm recently in a tough time and low and behold I find his Bio--HAve MErcy in a dollar store bin. In it's passages was the confirmation of my belief in his good soul. I found many passages that lifted and inspired. His views on life came at a time when I really needed it.
God rest his big ol' heart and soul.
My condolences to all who loved him.
Thanks.

A friend of mine, when I was about 13
or 14, had an operation on his eyes to
aleviate "lazy eyelid" syndrome. When
he got out into bright sunlight, one
eye or the other would begin winking
uncontrollably -- so, of course, kids
being heartless, we soon nicknamed him
"Winkie". Winkie however, was not one
to let sleeping dogs lie, and began to
try to nickname all of us in turn.

At this time, Wolfman Jack was only on
from something like midnight to 4 A.M.
(on XERF, Pecuña, Coahuila, Mexico --
down south with the donkey, baby) and
was the absolute coolest DJ I'd ever
heard. I ate, drank, walked, talked
and tirelessly extolled the virtues of
Wolfman Jack on the radio. I would
wait till my parents were asleep and
crank up my transistor radio, pull
the covers over my head and settle in
for four hours of incredible listening
to the Wolfman. This would have been
somewhere around 1961/2, in Tyler, TX.
Well, Winkie didn't waste much time
applying the nickname "Wolfman", and
so has it been all my life...& I'm 55,
now. But even now, I ply the airwaves,
vainly trying to find that gruff voice
selling baby chicks and autographed
pictures of Jesus Christ... there'll
never be another like him. Aaaoooooow!

Thanks for listening.

I was sent a link to your site by a friend in New Jersey who knew I would be interested, and I am!

Due to a fortuitous marriage in my family, Wolfman Jack became my Uncle in 1974. I got to meet him and talk with him a few times. Uncle Bob used to send me tickets to his shows at "Knott's Scary Farm" every Halloween. It was meeting him and learning more about him that eventually led me into a carreer in Radio and as a Mobile DJ.

One of my most prized photos is of the two of us at my cousin's (his niece's) baptism in 1976.

I would write more, but I am going to go surf this great site now...Keep on Rockin'!
